Why Acupuncture?

acupuncture needles

Acupuncture has been used successfully for thousands of years and remains as relevant to today’s society as it was to earlier cultures. Any illness or symptom is seen as the result of an imbalance in your vital energy or life-force.

Treatment involves the gentle placing of exceptionally fine, sterilised, disposable needles into acupuncture points located just beneath the surface of the skin. This stimulates the body’s healing process and as a result, health often improves on all levels: physical, mental and emotional.

This principle is fundamental because it means that the underlying cause of illness is dealt with, rather than just masking your symptoms.

Five Element acupuncture in particular can be minimal in terms of the number of needles used, yet can lead to marked improvements in health.

The first appointment includes a detailed consultation and a treatment. Follow-up sessions assess progress since the previous visit and serve to guide the next treatment.

"When you touch one thing with deep awareness, you touch everything."

Working with patients highlights the miraculous capacity the body has to heal itself with the appropriate prompt and environment. A gentle approach is often all that is needed to initiate the therapeutic response.

After benefiting from treatment myself, I qualified in 5 Element Acupuncture in 1999. In 2001 I also qualified in the Bowen Technique which has proved to be an invaluable addition to my practice. Over many years I have helped address a variety of patient’s issues including musculoskeletal pain and restriction, sciatica, digestive problems, poor sleep, headaches, low energy, low mood and many other problems.

Of particular interest is the fact that the physical body affects mental and emotional health and vice-versa. This was all too evident working with victims of civil wars in Bosnia and El Salvador where trauma is an all too common feature of multiple complaints. The beauty of acupuncture and Bowen is that we treat the whole person, not just a symptom in isolation.

Fundamental to my practice is the holistic approach of acupuncture.  Our health and well-being depend on myriad factors, such as lifestyle, relationships, work, diet, emotions, constitution, as well as climate, environment and our living conditions.  I am passionate about supporting and playing a part in helping each individual find the path to healing that is right for them.  I never cease to be amazed at how small changes can make a big and profound difference.

I obtained a Licentiate in Acupuncture at the College of Traditional Acupuncture, Warwick and a First Class BA (Hons) Traditional Acupuncture at Oxford Brookes University.  As a member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC), the leading national regulatory body for professional acupuncture practitioners, I adhere to their strict standards of care in clinical safety, ethical and academic requirements.  I undertake regular Continuing Professional Development courses.
